CHINESE NEW YEAR
Chinese New Year, also known as the spring festival in modern China, and one of the Lunar New Years in Asia, is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. What I just said, I got from the wikipedia, for more information, you will have to continue reading this post about my experience and how I celebrate Chinese New Year.
Going back to my parents' hometown is what always keep me awake in bed, causing me to not have the sleep I need for the big day which is dinner with my relatives. What makes dinner with my relatives so special is that my aunts will be cooking and bringing their best dish to my grandparents' house to enjoy together. We shared jokes over dinner and the atmosphere was what kept me warm for the night.
The next day, my grandparents' prepared mee hoon soup for us and gave us ang pao (a red packet with money inside). After that, we visited friends and other relatives. About the ang pao, there is an interesting story behind it. In short, a devil was causing children to fall sick and die, to protect their grandson, two old folks ask for help from the 8 chinese gods. They then transform into coins and was asked to be put into a red packet and was hidden under the grandson's pillow. In the end, the grandson was saved.
Chinese New Year is not about the ang pao or the money ( unless you are broke like me ), in fact , it is about celebrating and having fun with your family and friends. Happy Chinese New Year!!!
